Ella, Sri Lanka Uga Ghiri
A wide view over Ella
On the historic Sutherland Estate in Ella, Uga Ghiri unfolds across eleven acres where cloud forest meets contemporary design. Fifteen standalone villas form private retreats, each with its own heated jacuzzi for the fresh mountain air of Ella. At the heart of the property stands a carefully restored colonial manor that serves as the main house, with soaring ceilings and the architecture of its era. The view reaches across tea plantations cascading down the hills to the Nine Arch Bridge, a masterpiece of early railway engineering curving through the jungle. Ella lies in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, within reach of famous tea estates, sacred peaks and waterfalls. All meals and select drinks are included in your stay.

Experiences
On the artisanal tea experience, you follow the leaf into the cup: Plucking, processing by hand and blending your own signature Ceylon tea. Further options include a cooking class after a visit to local markets, guided tastings of Ceylon arrack, cycling downhill from Namunukula Ridge through tea estates and villages, and sundowners on the grounds.
On the path through sacred shrines, you visit historic temples with rock-carved Buddhas. With a naturalist you explore the surroundings or join “Rewild the Hills”, a conservation walk documenting the region’s biodiversity, alongside a butterfly and dragonfly breeding initiative.
Room categories
Uga Ghiri offers 15 villas of the same size. Each is a retreat of contemporary elegance, designed with subtle Sri Lankan touches that honour the island’s artistic heritage.
The villas (approx. 111 sqm) offer generous space for unhurried living, with a king-size bed and a living area. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the dramatic landscape around Ella, and the bathroom has a bathtub, a walk-in shower and a double vanity. On the outdoor deck awaits a heated private jacuzzi of about 1.8 metres, ideal for moments of calm in the mountain air. Air conditioning and ceiling fan, minibar, safe, sound system, an espresso machine with Sri Lankan tea, bathrobes and a pillow menu on request complete the villa.
